TikTok is no longer just a place for fun, viral dances (though those still exist). It’s evolved to be a virtual playground where filmmakers, actors, models, and all kinds of creatives can express themselves through their art. One niche blowing up is #SewingTiKTok, where fashion designers are increasingly sharing their design processes on the app. Who would have thought the land of the Renegade could become a place to find the next best fashion talents?

Scrolling through the #SewingTikTok hashtag today, one can stumble upon all sorts of cool designers and aesthetics. A TikTok favorite is John Azzi, an Australia-based designer who spontaneously drapes elegant evening gowns onto mannequins (he’s done dresses inspired by Cruella de Vil and Kendall Jenner, among others). TikTok is also obsessed with the work of @shawty.arabia, whose Bridgerton-inspired design now has almost 1 million views (the beaded, lace, and pearl corset she created is, indeed, stunning). Upcycled design is also gaining major momentum on TikTok. Utopia, for instance, is designed by the retired accountant Peder Cho. He splices vintage tees and re-sews them into brand new creations. Arielle Sidney has even turned Target or Aldi bags into unexpectedly-chic dresses.

Whether they’re making streetwear, formal wear, or anything in between, the designers are simply having fun experimenting. All the while, they’re offering an inside glimpse at how they execute even the wildest of ideas. It’s not so much about the end result or the finished garment, rather the journey it took to get there. Which is a refreshing change from highly produced fashion shows from mega brands. One can scroll for hours on the app while watching these creatives sew together magical creations. But be warned: Once you start, it’s hard to stop!
