The Spiky Bun Is Back And It’s the Cutest Updo for Off-Duty Hair

There’s a new cool-girl hairstyle on the block, and it’s taking its cue from the ’90s. The spiky bun, as seen on Mandy Moore, Hilary Duff, Brandy and Alicia Silverstone circa 1999, is back and has collected a new generation of fans.

We’ve spotted the spiky bun on everyone from Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, to Billie Eilish who doubled it up with spiky space buns. Basically, it’s giving us the ’90s flair we need, and a new default updo that offers an alternative to the messy bun we lived in for the duration of 2020.

The spiky bun is a step on from the supermodel bun that we’ve seen take off over the past year, which has seen buns become sleeker, tighter and slightly lower, sitting at the crown and below rather than right atop our heads.

Plus, the spiky bun pairs perfectly with the baguette bags and slim shades that have made a triumphant return to our wardrobes.

Even better, it’s easy to nail and looks effortlessly chic. TikTok has given us tons of tutorials on how to get it right. We love @alishaakaurr’s simple how-to, which involves center-parting your hair, pulling the front sections loose, and smoothing the rest back into a slick ponytail at the crown. Twist your hair; wrap it into a bun, leaving the ends loose and spiky; then secure them in place at the front of your bun using a hair band. Done.

For a more intricate take on the style, @yeshipolitoo pins back either side of her parting to create a criss-cross shape at the roots.

And @miaisobellebarker curled her spiky ends with a curling iron for a throwback finish that works well with longer hair.

As for finishing touches? All you need is a tube of lipgloss and you’re done.
